Question about LEDs

Postby The Crusher » Mon Apr 30, 2012 6:10 pm

Hi everyone! :)

I have a question for you. What are the different type of LEDs (DIP, SMD, superflux, etc.) used in? Like where is the DIP LED typically used, and where is the superflux typically used?
And another question, why do we need different type of LEDs?

I am going to have a presentation about LEDs on wednesday, so I need some information about different types of LEDs, and are therefore asking here in this forum, since this is the best forum for discussing LEDs!

Dip LEDs were the first, nearly all electronic components were "through-hole" and the DIP LED was a low power and low brightness indicator, used where ever you needed indicators! On control panels etc. The Superflux LED is a more modern package type. 4 legs gives it improved thermal and physical stability. So you can run the dice (the bit that makes the light) a bit harder and use them in high vibration and movement environments, they're commonly used in car / truck light assemblies.
SMD LEDs are part of the SMD component revolution in electronics, making boards easier to auto assemble and making construction faster and cheaper (and smaller!!).
That's a very brief overview!

Thanks for your reply!

This sounds interessing. I understand that this is the short version. I have a presentation on about 5 minutes, so if you have any more detailed history about the leds, please give them to me. The SMD and superflux sounds interessing to hear more about.

Interestingly in the history of LEDs the first LEDs were "discovered" when electricity was passed through carborundum (like what you get on sand paper!). The massive leap in LED technology was achieved in 1997 when Shuji Nakamura (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shuji_Nakamura) created the first bright white (or more accurately blue) LED.

You may have enough info already, But I have found this website to be very useful with info about how Led's work, The sustainability and future use, and an overview of the history!
