A little bit of 3D fame for 5 mins

Postby vimes79 » Fri Mar 01, 2013 4:42 am

Woo! So I printed off some (pretty basic) lettering on my RRP Mendel this morning and posted it on twitter as a piece for Adafruit's weekly 3D Thursday, next thing I know Ben Tweets at me that Adafruit have re posted it and +1'd me after about 5mins of posting the original and once I went on Google+ to look I saw that they had also put it up in their much read official blog and RSS feed!
Pretty Cool!

My first published work : http://www.adafruit.com/blog/2013/02/28/a-little-something-i-knocked-together-for-adafruit-3dthursday-3dthursday/
Chuffed??? YEAH!!!

Sad I know considering its an open source image of the Open Hardware logo copied and re-sized from thingiverse and just a couple of words created in 3d lettering in SketchUp and exported using the Su2stl export mod into skeinforge for a massive 12 layer slicing (0.48mm layers) then the logo printed, removed from glass & filament changed then the lettering printed and the logo put back on and positioned for photo (wish I had put the Kapton tape on straight now!).

I have the layer hieght nailed now anyway, stays level and clean lines from 0.2mm layers to 0.48mm layers and I have run it up to about 60mm high so far and it stays straight! Still a little tweaking on flow control as it over shoots the edge now and then but that's a simple trial and error reduction fix. Its all starting to come together nicely!!!

I will put some new model photos up tomorrow for you all to check out at your leisure and I should be able to print and post any models etc any one (regualars) want within a few days now. Got 430m of PLA in 7 colours inc Glow in the Dark now and have 2x 1KG drums of ABS due tomorrow (just Black and White for parts only as PLA is great for everything else but a little lightweight and brittle for moving parts and structural parts BUT doesn't give off toxic fumes like ABS does)

I think im going to print off a bunch of letters prob a little more low profile then the ones above and then hot glue some magnetic sheet on to the backs for some custom fridge magnet letters to make rude words on your fridge door. I am going to order some magnetic sheeting and see how well it works and now neat it is and if all is good then people can let me know if you have a request for a word or two for your own fridge!

As soon as I saw it I knew it would get blogged! Was actually sharing the picture to the communities on G+ when it popped up. Those guys are nimble!
