So one is doing all the designing and spending money to take the 3D world forward while the other is cloning them and making all the money!

All they need to do is have that one amazing idea or plan and not publish it then watch the other struggle to keep up

It's kind of how the open source model can struggle, with 3D printers being such a high ticket item they're going to get cloned and the mark up cut. I think the clones have an important part of the growth of the market too, lowing entry barriers for people and just getting 3D printers out there! It was the same with Arduino.

I think the size is an issue. Laser tends to be smaller and easier to maintain. Plasma cutters are cool, but only cut conductive materials

Water is good when thermal distortion or hardening is an issue. Also zero dust. Laser is good for acrylic because of the edge polishing effect

Only mentioned it because I was watching American Chopper and they have a flowjet that looks amazing.

Not watched American Chopper in a long long time. Watching Son's of Anarchy though, which is similar but the workshop tools are used for very different things!

Do you mean "Sons of Guns" by any chance???
Sons of Anarchy is the show about an outlaw Motorcycle Club where as Sons of Guns is/was about a specialist firearms workshop where they have some SERIOUS gear, just seeing their CNC machine gives me goosebumps, it must be a $250k-300k machine upwards, its huge and does the most intricate work, they have milled all sorts in it from silencers and stocks right down to tiny firing pins and trigger mechs. I love, its an awesome show and have all 4 seasons here on my external HDD.
Unfortunately they were getting ready to film the new series when that piece of shite walked into that Midnight screening of Dark Knight Rises and gunned down all those people in their cinema seats... Because he was using alot of the kind of modified gear that Red Jacket (The Sons of Guns shop) use and/or make and sell (Beta Magazines - 100 round drums for AR15 as well as some of the weapons they regully feature and take out into their range to let rip) the program has been put on hold, im guessing until the current firearms debate in the US that the cinema attack sparked, settles down and the NRA members in congress squash any attempt to restrict the sale of assault rifles and high capacity magazines.
Hopefully it will be back as its a great show and is mostly about the engineering and only really the last 5 or 10 mins are dedicated to Blowing S@#t Up...

Nothing better then pushing equipment, and its amazing to see how more or less the same kind of cnc can be used for so many different things ie one to make bike parts the other for guns and a mini one for engraving.

Plus blowing sh!t up in a show helps
