Looks amazing mate, nice job.

You could put a camera under your tophat when done and have it so you can login to it too see what's happening.

Once I build #004 (or whatever number we are up to) i'm going to be using a webcam with some simple LED lighting, maybe even IR (I have seen a few cool hacks for turning £15 webcams into night vision cameras by modding the camera some how and then using IR LED's to light up the viewing area on demand) all connected to a simple web server for streaming to a page that will have a few buttons to activate the lighting (if night time) and also to activate a couple of responses from the Brrd. I need to tie that up with the GPRS link too so you can send a standard SMS text message to the number given to generate a visual response from the Brrd. (RobotGrrl has a similar system (with multiple Brrds) set up to react to Twitter sent commands on her site here : http://robobrrd.com/brrdwatcher/
Will most likely have it set up in my front window as its basically a shop window at the perfect height and on a busy pavement into the market place and the city center so ideal for displaying things you want people to take notice of and then if I put a simple instruction card with the phone number to text the commands on then people can see it working in the flesh as it were first hand. Will obviously add the advertising for where people can get their own Brrd from (If RobotGrrl has finished clearing her backlog of Indigogo Brrds by then). Its a handy window to have as I can display items with the potential to add links to the places to buy them from. The 4x Starwars snow flakes and the Reindeer certainly got a lot of attention this past xmas! Loads of people were checking them out and alot of ppl actually stopped and had a good old look! That's only the ones I witnessed doing it, I bet 100's stopped to look over the period, especially when I lit the whole window up with a MEGA Bright RGB ThingM MaxM triple 12v 10mm RGB LED Lighting system that was on a nice bright color rotation! It really made the Snowflakes look fantastic!

Its certainly going to be used this years xmas if I get my Laser Cutter in time or even if I have to get items cut at Phenoptix to re-sell my self.

The DIY night vision sounds like a fun little project, might have to look into that some more.

You don't mess around do you!!!! Love seeing everything you post up here and can't wait for the next one.

Best it would be funny to watch people walk past and txt your robobrrd, should put a cam in the window to record how they react.
Sound like you have the ideal window to do your own advertising!

Yeah its a pretty good location and an ideal window for showing stuff off, although im not sure about the law surrounding the use of domestic properties for advertising etc, im pretty sure having a few bits on display and a couple of website addresses doesn't break any law or rules tho.

I like to keep busy. I got back into electronics as a hobby at about this time last year after 18months of my gear being boxed up for a break to get more involved with my Gaming community and mainly as electronics and communications was taking over my life, was working with electronics at work as well as alot of server work and communication systems, I had just spent 12 months of my part time HNC doing the electronics units and had just finished two big projects at home that were duino powered. So I kind of hit it hard again last year, especially with alot of cool new tech, many more sources of info and other people using electronics as a hobby with loads of new forums etc and much better availability of components at reasonable prices. It works quite well now I have finished my HNC (just about), my new job is focused purely on UHF communications and I have a good plan set out for what I want to achieve this year and build/make/buy. First thing is to start using up the masses of odd boards and bits that I got carried away with and bought far too many of last year with ideas in mind but ended up going in a different direction or used a different part. I have loads of shields, dev/eval and full MCU boards, breakouts and plugin kits and a ton of assorted displays, controllers, radios and other specialist parts.

Well the innards for RoboBrrd UK #001 are on their way to me and #004 is on its way to Nial. I've discussed with Erin (RoboGrrl) that $2 from every Brrd we cut will go to her for central Brrd development!

Now that's very nice of you, other businesses should sit up and take note of how you work they may learn something.

Here is a little taste of what UK #004 is doing...

Face plate and lightened wings and beak :
Image

This is going to be a build based on the tech rather then on decoration etc.. The awesome cutout face has been done to allow me to keep the Brrd as just an MDF cube without it looking like a wooden box. I have also cut out parts of the wings and beak again partly to look better but also to cut their weight down.

I have all the new tech here now and am ready to build. This includes some tasty wireless gear and with the exception of the power cable (which I may be able to replace with a large 3 cell Li-Pol battery) the Brrd will be wireless and also connected to the Internet via (hopefully - waiting on a response about using two pieces of kit together) 2 methods depending on settings and environment.

There are a few places on the face plate where I have made a mistake and not left enough MDF between 2 cuts and it has created some very thin points on a couple of key areas and a few points on the base and face where the laser didn't quite cut all the way through where some of the MDF has torn around edges and a couple of the cutouts. I have already corrected the face design by shrinking the cut outs a bit to leave a good amount of board between cut areas to ensure there are no weak spots and will hopefully mean the cutter can be powered higher to ensure it cuts through without the issue of burning through narrow pieces etc. I have fitted the pieces that needed tweaking onto a single 300x200 page/sheet to send over to Phenoptix towers to hopefully be re-cut next week and then I can crack on with the build.

For now I have a circuit to build and test and the wireless gear to wrap my head around which will keep me busy for a while.

As always thanks to Ben/Phenoptix for the cutting and advice on CAD (Am a real newbie with CAD).

I will be keeping a better build log this time with more photos and less useless info. Am really looking forward to this build alot!
