16 Channel LED Chaser/Sequencer

Postby Trooper » Wed May 01, 2013 9:03 am

Hi Guys,
My names Andy and this is my first time on the forum, I spoke to a few of you at the Maker Fair in Newcastle Upon Tyne the other day and the guys said to post here on the forum to see if anyone could help me.

Basically I have a Sandtrooper Costume which I use for Charity Events and im building a Backpack for it, on the backpack there is a large radio dial with 16 indentations where I would like to mount 16 multicoloured/blue LEDs that would chase round in various patterns. It would be mounted inside the radio case so there would be plenty room for equipment but would have to be lightweight, portable and battery powered.

I have seen several kits but they are all 8 channel but I would need 16, there is also a few kits that change patterns by pressing a switch, if possible I would like it to swap patterns automatically after a set period of time if this makes sense.

Here is a couple of links to what im try to achieve :-

Any help would be much appreciated guys thanks :)

Hey Andy! Welcome to the forums. Lots of ideas for the chase at the moment just looking forward to putting some into action. Hopefully after the vat return goes in ill have some time to play and we can come up with something suitable

Righto, so this is the 16 LEDs controlled by 6 shift registers and an Arduino. Add imagination for adding them to your radio http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIZX8qZ6nlE

Wiring together on a breadboard looks very complicated but to be honest it's not too bad. The parts (minus wires and something to put it together on) come in at around £15 for the bits and then the Arduino on top, which would allow you to change the code etc.

Wow that is absolutely fantastic its exactly what ive been looking for thank you :)

How do I go about getting all the parts for this and also the stick man project,
do I get them from you or do I have to get them via Elcojacobs website just it says its down for maintenance at the minute.

Once again thank you

We have all the bits for the chaser, I'll get them up tomorrow along with a price on the stickman stuff.
Dan off though so going to be a busy old day! Just the way I like it!

Just got the pack up on the website, still need to workout the LED man kit!

http://www.phenoptix.com/products/shift-register-project-pack-16-rgb-leds-and-6-registers You'll need something to wire them onto, I'm currently putting one onto a bit of stripboard. Also an Arduino Uno to control it all.
